Older Pedestrians May Face Greater Danger After Dark
Evening crossings can pose additional risk to pedestrians, especially as daylight fades or traffic moves steadily through an intersection. Drivers may need more time to notice someone walking across a road, while pedestrians may have less time to judge approaching vehicles.
Older pedestrians can face greater harm after being hit because their bodies may be more vulnerable to head trauma, fractures, and internal injuries. Even a brief roadway contact can become life-threatening.
Road design also matters. Wide lanes, turning traffic, shadows, and limited lighting can affect visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. After a serious pedestrian-vehicle collision, medical teams often review the type of impact, the person’s age, and the force involved to assess injury severity.
