Sherman Oaks, CA (May 22, 2026) – An apartment fire on the 14000 block of Dickens Street sent two people to the hospital and displaced several residents on Thursday morning. The fire broke out at around 9 a.m., just south of Ventura Boulevard and east of Van Nuys Boulevard.

Emergency units arrived to find heavy fire and thick smoke pouring from a second-story unit. The flames spread into the living room and at least one additional room, leaving charred debris and broken windows in their wake. A total of seven units were affected, with three declared uninhabitable.

A 69-year-old woman was taken to the hospital and treated for possible smoke inhalation; she was listed in moderate condition. A second person was also taken to the hospital, though details about that person’s injuries were not confirmed in the initial report.

Eight adults and one child were displaced. Two small dogs, both 16 years old, were rescued from a locked unit. One of the dogs was given oxygen at the scene.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the investigation remains active.

We hope both people hurt in this fire recover fully and soon.

What Happens After an Apartment Fire Displaces Residents in Los Angeles?

When a fire damages multiple units in an apartment building, the effects extend well beyond the unit where it started. Residents whose homes are deemed uninhabitable are typically referred to emergency housing resources, which may include temporary shelter programs or hotel placements arranged through the city or relief organizations. Smoke and water damage, even in units the fire didn’t reach directly, can still make those spaces unsafe to occupy.

Personal belongings, documents, and medications left inside become inaccessible until the building is cleared. For pet owners, the situation adds another layer of stress, since many emergency shelters don’t accommodate animals. In multi-unit buildings, fires that start in one apartment can spread quickly through shared walls, attics, or ventilation systems, which is why early detection and functioning fire alarms matter so much.
