Elkhart Co., IN (March 9, 2026) – Two people were injured following a crash on Friday afternoon at an intersection in Elkhart County. The accident occurred just before 4:30 p.m. on March 6 at State Road 120 and County Road 19.
Emergency units responded after a collision between two vehicles at the intersection. Authorities said a 65-year-old man from Bristol was driving west on State Road 120 when he attempted to turn left and did not yield to oncoming traffic.
The turning vehicle struck another car traveling through the intersection, and the impact pushed the second vehicle off the roadway and into a nearby sign.
Both drivers were hurt in the crash and taken to a hospital for treatment. Officials said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts remain with those injured as they receive care and recover.
How Left-Turn Collisions Occur at Rural Intersections
Intersections where highways meet county roads, such as State Road 120 and County Road 19, often involve vehicles traveling at higher speeds. When drivers attempt to turn left across opposing traffic, they must judge the distance and speed of approaching vehicles.
Left-turn crashes can happen when a driver misjudges how quickly another vehicle is approaching or when visibility is limited. Traffic moving straight through the intersection may have little time to slow down once a turning vehicle enters their path.
Rural intersections can also include fewer traffic controls than larger city junctions. Without signals or dedicated turning lanes, drivers must rely on timing and clear sight lines when making turning movements across traffic.
