ELKHART, Elkhart County, Ind., Oct. 1, 2026 — One person was hurt in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning, September 29, at the intersection of County Road 20 and Best Avenue in Elkhart County. The collision sent one vehicle off the road and into a speed limit sign and a utility pole, according to police.

Police were called to the intersection just after 8:30 a.m., officials said. An initial investigation indicates a 51-year-old Elkhart man was driving west on County Road 20 and turning into a parking lot when he failed to yield to an oncoming vehicle.

That oncoming vehicle, driven by a 36-year-old Mishawaka man, was struck and pushed off the roadway, hitting a speed limit sign and a utility pole, according to the report. The Mishawaka man was taken to a hospital with complaints of neck and back pain. His condition has not been released.

The Elkhart man was cited for failing to yield the right of way, police said. No further details on the crash have been released.

We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

What the Numbers Show About Crashes Outside the Vehicle

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023. That figure includes pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, but it also reflects how often a crash's damage extends beyond the vehicles involved, into signs, poles, guardrails, and other roadside objects.

Turning collisions, like one vehicle crossing into oncoming traffic at an intersection or parking lot entrance, are a common source of this kind of secondary damage. When a struck vehicle is pushed off its path, it often strikes whatever is nearby: a curb, a sign post, a utility pole. Those objects don't give way the way a vehicle's crumple zone does, so occupants can take a harder jolt than the initial impact alone would suggest.

Right-of-way disputes at intersections remain one of the most common contributing factors investigators cite in these crashes. Many happen at low speeds and close to home, on local roads, which is part of why they rarely draw the same attention as high-speed wrecks even though the injuries can be just as real.
