Fatal Apartment Fires by the Numbers
According to the National Fire Protection Association, home fires kill roughly one person in the United States every three hours, and most of those deaths happen in one- and two-family homes or apartment buildings rather than commercial properties. Apartment fires carry particular risk because a fire in one unit can trap residents in another before they're aware anything is wrong.
Most fatal apartment fires involve either cooking equipment, heating devices, or electrical faults, though a notable share are never traced to a single definitive cause. Smoke inhalation, not burns, is the leading cause of death in residential fires, which is why occupants can be overcome before flames ever reach them.
Investigators typically look at the point of origin, the materials involved, and whether working smoke alarms were present. Those findings shape not just the fire marshal's report but also any review of building safety and maintenance standards at the property.
