ELLENSBURG, Kittitas County, Wash., Oct. 3, 2026 — A pedestrian died on Friday afternoon, October 2, after he reportedly ran into traffic on Interstate 90 near Ellensburg and was struck by a semi-truck, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The man, 27, was reportedly in the median before entering the eastbound lanes; he allegedly stopped in the path of the oncoming truck and was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver, identified by the state patrol as a 36-year-old man from Umatilla, Oregon, was driving eastbound near Ellensburg city limits when the crash happened. He called 911 after the collision. He was wearing a seat belt and was not hurt. The truck was pulling two trailers, but only the cab sustained damage.

The pedestrian's name has not been released. The state patrol said it is working to notify his next of kin before identifying him publicly.

It remains unclear why the man entered the highway, and the state patrol continues to investigate the crash.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.

What Makes Pedestrian Crashes on Highways So Severe

A pedestrian struck on a highway faces forces that city-street crashes rarely produce. Closing speed is the biggest factor: a vehicle traveling 65 mph covers nearly 100 feet per second, leaving a driver almost no time to brake or steer once a person appears in the lane. The weight gap matters too. A loaded semi-truck can weigh 20 to 30 times more than a person, so even a glancing hit transfers enormous energy with little resistance.

Vehicles are engineered to protect occupants, with crumple zones, airbags, and seat belts absorbing impact for the people inside. None of that engineering extends outward. A pedestrian has no structure to absorb a hit, no restraint system, and no protective cage. Speed changes the odds sharply. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 77 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark in 2023, a reflection of how visibility and reaction time combine with vehicle speed to determine whether a person survives being struck.

On interstates, where speed limits run highest and shoulders are the only refuge, there is rarely a buffer wide enough to compensate for a split-second misjudgment by either a driver or a person on foot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can drivers reduce the chance of hitting a pedestrian?

Scanning the roadway and shoulders well ahead, slowing in low-light conditions, and staying alert near medians or disabled vehicles can give a driver more time to react if someone enters the roadway unexpectedly.

What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?

Pedestrians struck by vehicles usually suffer head trauma, spinal injuries, broken bones, and internal injuries, since they have no structural protection against impact.

What usually causes pedestrians to end up in roadways they shouldn't be in?

Causes vary widely and can include disabled vehicles, confusion, medical episodes, or attempts to cross at unsafe locations. Investigators typically look at the full timeline before concluding.

Does vehicle speed really change survival odds that much?

Yes. Pedestrian survival rates drop sharply as vehicle speed increases, since higher speeds mean less time to stop and more energy transferred on impact.

What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Ellensburg, WA
