Elmore, OH (March 15, 2026) – A commercial truck driver died after a crash on Interstate 80/90 just west of Elmore in Ottawa County.
According to early reports, two commercial vehicles had stopped in the eastbound lanes of I-80/90 around 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, after a separate crash occurred in the area. As traffic slowed near the scene, another commercial truck approached the stopped vehicles.
Investigators say the approaching truck failed to stop in time and crashed into one of the stopped vehicles. The impact pushed that truck into another commercial vehicle nearby.
The driver of the truck that struck the stopped vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released the driver’s identity while notifying family members.
The drivers of the other two trucks were hurt but reported minor injuries following the crash.
The collision caused major traffic disruption for several hours. Eastbound lanes of I-80/90 were reduced to a single lane for much of the day while crews worked at the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Crashes Sometimes Occur Near Stopped Traffic on Highways
Highway crashes sometimes happen when drivers encounter unexpected slow or stopped traffic. On busy routes such as interstate highways, vehicles often travel at high speeds, which reduces the time available to react when traffic conditions suddenly change.
Large commercial trucks require much more distance to stop than smaller vehicles. If traffic slows suddenly due to a previous crash, construction, or road hazards, drivers may have difficulty stopping in time. Limited visibility, distractions, or delayed braking can also contribute to these situations.
Chain-reaction crashes can occur when one vehicle strikes another and pushes it into nearby traffic. These types of incidents often involve multiple vehicles and may block travel lanes for extended periods while damaged vehicles are removed and the roadway is cleared.
