What Investigators Commonly Review After a Residential Fire
After a fatal house fire, investigators typically examine the area where the fire is believed to have started to determine how the flames spread through the structure. Burn patterns, smoke damage, and electrical systems are often reviewed as part of the investigation process.
Fire officials may also inspect appliances, heating equipment, and wiring to identify possible ignition sources. In some cases, structural damage can complicate investigations because portions of the home may be unsafe to enter immediately after the fire is extinguished.
The amount of smoke inside a home can also play a major role in residential fire emergencies. Fires that begin on lower floors may spread quickly through hallways and stairways, reducing visibility and limiting escape routes for occupants inside the structure.
