EVERETT, Snohomish County, Wash., Oct. 1, 2026 — A man in his 60s died on Wednesday morning, September 30, after a vehicle struck him on Broadway in Everett. The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. at 13th Street and Broadway.

Officers and first responders were called to the intersection after reports of a pedestrian struck by a car, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers, Everett police officer Natalie Given said. Investigators do not believe impairment played a role in the crash.

Broadway was closed in both directions between 12th Street and 14th Street for several hours while officers worked the scene, reopening by about 10 a.m. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release the man's identity.

The crash remains under investigation. No further details have been released.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

Why Pedestrian Crashes Turn Deadly: The Role of Vehicle Size and Speed

Early morning hours bring a mix of low light, tired drivers, and pedestrians who may be harder to see against dark pavement and storefronts. Many fatal pedestrian crashes happen at intersections or crossings where a driver's attention is split between traffic signals, turning movements, and people on foot. Even a brief lapse at low speed can leave a driver unable to react in time.

The size and shape of the vehicle matter as much as speed. Taller front ends, common on pickups and SUVs, strike pedestrians higher on the body and are more likely to cause chest, head, or internal injuries than cars with lower, sloped hoods that tend to strike the legs first. A taller grille can also block a driver's view of someone close to the vehicle, particularly a shorter adult or a child.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2023. Investigators examining crashes like this one typically look at vehicle speed, driver visibility, lighting conditions, and whether the pedestrian had the right of way at the time of impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?

A large share occurs at or near intersections and marked crossings, where vehicle and pedestrian paths cross directly. Unmarked crossings and roadway segments with poor lighting also see frequent incidents.

Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?

Yes. Reduced visibility makes it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, and the majority of pedestrian fatalities nationally occur after dark or during low-light hours, such as early morning.

What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?

Call 911 immediately if possible, or ask a bystander to call. Stay as still as you can until medical help arrives, since some injuries aren't immediately obvious, and try to get the driver's information and any witness contacts if you're able.

Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?

Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and pedestrians both carry responsibility for watching traffic signals and crossing safely.

What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Everett, WA

Anyone involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash should call 911 right away so police and medics can respond quickly. Even if injuries seem minor at first, a medical evaluation afterward is important, since shock can mask pain from internal injuries or head trauma.

If you're a witness, staying at the scene to speak with responding officers can help investigators piece together what happened. Pedestrians or family members involved in a crash should also request a copy of the police report once it's available, as it often contains details useful for insurance or follow-up questions. Community members who knew the man are encouraged to contact the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office for updates on the identification process.
