How Failure-to-Yield Violations Can Lead to Bicycle Collisions
Failure-to-yield violations are a common factor in bicycle-related roadway emergencies, particularly at intersections. Drivers are generally required to give the right of way when traffic laws or signs indicate that another road user should proceed first.
Cyclists can be especially vulnerable because they have less protection than occupants of passenger vehicles. Even at relatively low speeds, contact between a vehicle and a bicycle may result in significant injuries. Intersections usually require drivers to monitor several directions at once, making attention and proper yielding especially important.
Traffic signs, pavement markings, and visibility conditions can all influence how safely vehicles and bicycles move through crossing points. Following right-of-way rules and remaining alert to all roadway users can help reduce the likelihood of serious injuries and improve safety for everyone traveling through intersections.
