FAIRFIELD, Solano County, Calif., Oct. 19, 2026 — A 23-year-old Vacaville man died early on Sunday morning, October 18, after a single-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 80 in Fairfield, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said Solano County deputies were alerted by an automated crash notification around 2:52 a.m. and found a silver 2014 Hyundai Elantra that had struck a tree just west of the Cordelia truck weigh station. The driver, the only person in the car, was reportedly trapped in the driver's seat, unresponsive and without a pulse when officers arrived.
Officers began CPR and continued until Fairfield Fire Department crews arrived. He was taken to NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield, where he was pronounced dead at 3:27 a.m.
Investigators believe the driver lost control of the Elantra and struck the tree, and the CHP said he was not wearing a seatbelt. The agency said alcohol is suspected as a factor, though toxicology results are still pending. The Solano County Coroner's Office will release his identity once his next of kin has been notified.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I think a driver near me is impaired?
Keep your distance, avoid passing or engaging with the vehicle, and call 911 with a location and description as soon as it's safe to do so. Let law enforcement make contact.
Why do impaired-driving crashes tend to cause more serious injuries?
Alcohol and other impairing substances slow reaction time and reduce coordination, so drivers often fail to brake or steer away from a hazard before impact, resulting in crashes at higher speeds with little or no attempt to avoid them.
Can drugs other than alcohol impair driving?
Yes. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and illegal substances can all affect reaction time, judgment, and coordination, and CHP investigations routinely test for a range of substances, not just alcohol.
What are warning signs of an impaired driver on the road?
Watch for weaving within or across lanes, inconsistent speed, delayed braking, driving without headlights at night, or wide turns. If you notice these signs, keep back and report it.
What to Do After a DUI Crash in Fairfield, CA
If you're involved in or witness a suspected DUI crash, call 911 immediately and stay as safe a distance away as possible. Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical professional, since injuries like concussions or internal trauma aren't always obvious right away. Cooperate with responding officers and give an honest account of what you saw. If you've lost someone in a crash like this, lean on family, friends, or local support resources in Fairfield while the investigation moves forward, and know that official findings, including toxicology results, often take time to finalize.
