FAIRFIELD, Solano County, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 — One person died in a crash Tuesday night, October 13, along eastbound Interstate 80 in Fairfield, according to the CHP. The collision happened near the Air Base Parkway off-ramp within about an hour of each other.

The first crash happened around 10:45 p.m., the CHP said. A 19-year-old man from San Pablo was struck by an SUV. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The crashes shut down multiple lanes of eastbound I-80 for hours overnight. All lanes reopened by about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The circumstances of both collisions remain under investigation. We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

What Secondary Crashes at Highway Scenes Reveal About Roadside Risk

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023. That figure includes pedestrians, cyclists, and people standing outside their vehicles, a group that also includes first responders working roadside incidents. It is a reminder that a stopped vehicle or a person outside it faces a different kind of exposure than someone inside a moving car.

Crashes into stopped emergency vehicles and work zones tend to happen fast and with little warning for the driver approaching from behind. Flares, cones, and flashing lights are meant to give drivers time to react, but at highway speeds that window can close quickly, especially at night when visibility is lower.

Agencies that respond to highway incidents often treat the scene itself as a hazard separate from the original crash. Multiple vehicles with lights on, lane closures, and personnel standing near traffic all add risk that did not exist before the first incident happened.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a family do after a fatal crash like this one?

Families can request a copy of the official crash report once it is finalized and can contact the investigating agency directly with questions about the timeline or next steps. It's common for some details to remain unavailable until the investigation closes.

How do agencies investigate crashes involving multiple vehicles?

Investigators typically reconstruct the scene using physical evidence, vehicle data, and witness statements, and they may take weeks or longer to determine contributing factors, especially when more than one incident is involved.

How long do fatal-crash investigations usually take?

Timelines vary widely depending on the complexity of the scene and whether toxicology or technical data, such as vehicle computer records, needs to be analyzed. Some cases close in a few weeks; others take months.

Does impairment play a role in crashes like this?

Impairment is one of several factors investigators routinely check for, alongside speed, distraction, and mechanical issues. In this case, authorities said alcohol does not appear to have been involved in the first crash.

What to Do After a Highway Crash in Fairfield, CA

If you're involved in or witness a highway crash, move to a safe location away from traffic lanes if possible and call 911 right away. Try to note the time, location, and any details about the scene, such as weather, lighting, or posted warnings, while they're fresh in your mind. If CHP or another agency responds, get the report number before you leave so you can follow up later.
