FAIRFIELD, Wayne County, Ill., Sept. 24, 2026 — A pickup truck rolled over after colliding with an SUV Tuesday afternoon, September 22, on Illinois Highway 15 near County Road 2300 East east of Fairfield, sending two people to the hospital.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Department said the crash happened around 5:29 p.m. at the Merriam Crossroads intersection. A pickup truck heading east on Illinois 15 reportedly began passing another vehicle near the intersection at the same time an SUV stopped at the crossroads started turning west onto the highway.
Investigators said the SUV moved into the pickup's path. The pickup struck the SUV, pushed it past the intersection, then left the road on the left side and rolled, coming to rest on its roof.
The SUV's driver, a 19-year-old Fairfield woman, was taken to Fairfield Memorial Hospital by Wayne County Ambulance Service, the sheriff's department reported. A 16-year-old passenger from Carmi riding in the SUV was also transported to Fairfield Memorial Hospital. The pickup's driver, a 68-year-old Mt. Erie man, declined medical treatment at the scene.
Fairfield Rural Fire Department also responded. The sheriff's department cited the pickup driver for passing within 100 feet of an intersection.
