SAGINAW, Tuscola County, Mich., Oct. 7, 2026 — A 35-year-old Saginaw man died Monday evening, October 5, after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Unionville Road and West Akron Road in Fairgrove Township, Michigan State Police said.

The crash happened around 6:44 p.m. near Unionville Rd. and W. Akron Rd., according to troopers from the Caro Post. A preliminary investigation found a 2024 Dodge Hornet driven by a 55-year-old Akron woman was heading eastbound on Akron Road and reportedly failed to stop at Unionville Road, striking a 2025 Nissan Versa traveling northbound.

The Versa was driven by a 41-year-old Saginaw woman. A 35-year-old Saginaw man riding as a passenger in that car suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. Both drivers were seriously hurt and were taken to hospitals outside the immediate area.

Investigators say alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash. The case remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced as of this report.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

Where Rural Intersection Crashes Tend to Happen

Crashes involving a failure to stop at an intersection cluster on rural roads where two paved highways cross without a traffic signal, often with only stop signs on one approach. Drivers moving at highway speed may misjudge the distance to cross traffic or simply miss the sign in low light or unfamiliar terrain, and the lack of a signal means there is no forced pause for either driver.

These intersections are common across Michigan's farm townships, where long, straight stretches of road invite higher speeds right up to the crossing point. A driver who rolls through a stop sign at 55 mph gives the other vehicle almost no time to react.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic fatalities decreased 4.3 percent from 2022 to 2023, a trend investigators point to when evaluating whether local enforcement and road design changes are having an effect at rural crossings like this one.
