Why Centerline Crossings Often Lead to Severe Crashes
Crashes that occur after a vehicle crosses the centerline are often serious because they can involve direct impacts with oncoming traffic. These collisions frequently happen on two-lane roads where vehicles travel in opposite directions without a physical divider.
Several factors may cause a driver to drift or cross the centerline. Driver fatigue, distraction, speeding, or loss of control can all contribute to this type of crash. In some cases, roadway curves or limited visibility can also increase the risk.
Seat belt use can greatly affect injury outcomes in these situations. When occupants are properly restrained, the chance of being thrown forward or ejected from a vehicle is reduced. This protection can make a significant difference during high-impact collisions.
