Why Major Highway Closures Usually Follow Fatal Traffic Collisions
When a deadly traffic collision happens on a major roadway, lanes are usually closed for several hours while crews document evidence and clear debris. Investigators may examine vehicle positions, skid marks, roadway visibility, and traffic patterns to better understand how the crash occurred.
Road closures also help protect drivers and workers nearby. During this process, damaged vehicles may be removed, photographs can be taken, and measurements are often collected from the roadway. In some situations, investigators also review surveillance footage or speak with witnesses who were nearby before the collision occurred.
Long closures are more common on highways and rural roads where traffic must be redirected safely. Even after vehicles are removed, crews may still need additional time to reopen lanes and restore normal traffic flow.
