Frequently Asked Questions
How much does speed affect whether someone survives a crash?
Higher speeds increase both the force of impact and the distance needed to stop, so even a modest increase in speed can turn a survivable crash into a fatal one, especially in collisions involving large trucks.
Why does wearing a seat belt matter so much in a crash like this?
A seat belt keeps an occupant from being thrown into the steering wheel, dashboard, or out of the vehicle entirely, which is often the difference between walking away and suffering a fatal injury in a high-speed highway crash.
What should a family do after a fatal crash like this one?
Families typically work with the coroner's office to handle identification and release of the body, and can request a copy of the official crash report from the investigating agency once it becomes available.
How do investigators determine what caused a fatal highway crash?
Troopers typically examine the vehicles involved, review any available dashcam or surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and document the scene before issuing a report on what happened.
What to Do After a Highway Crash in Calhoun, GA
If you're involved in or witness a serious crash on the interstate near Calhoun, move to a safe location if possible and call 911 right away. Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical professional, since injuries from a high-speed impact aren't always obvious right away. Take photos of the scene if it's safe to do so, and get the names and contact information of any witnesses. Request a copy of the official crash report from the Georgia State Patrol once it's available, and keep records of any medical treatment you receive in the days following the crash.
