Why Extrication May Be Needed After a Highway Crash
Extrication is sometimes required when a crash leaves a vehicle heavily damaged, and occupants cannot safely exit on their own. Specialized rescue equipment is usually used to remove doors, roofs, or other sections of a vehicle while minimizing the risk of additional injury. This process can take time, especially when large commercial vehicles are involved.
Crashes involving semi-trucks usually generate significant impact forces because of the size and weight differences between vehicles. As a result, responders may need to secure the scene, stabilize damaged vehicles, and carefully remove occupants before the area can be cleared. These procedures help protect both those involved in the crash and emergency personnel working at the scene.
