Risks of Passing on Two-Lane Highways
Passing on a two-lane highway requires drivers to judge the distance, speed, and position of approaching traffic. A mistake in that judgment can leave little time to return to the proper lane.
Large commercial vehicles also need additional space and time to complete passing maneuvers. Drivers should make sure there is enough clear roadway before moving into an opposing traffic lane.
Drivers should avoid speeding while passing and return to their lane only when there is enough room to do so safely. Staying alert and following posted speed limits can help reduce the risk of head-on crashes.
