Why Road Closures Are Common After Fatal Traffic Crashes
Road closures usually follow fatal traffic crashes to allow investigators time to document evidence and safely examine the roadway. During this process, crews may measure tire marks, photograph vehicle positions, inspect debris patterns, and evaluate road conditions. These steps can help establish how the collision occurred and whether factors such as speed, visibility, weather, or mechanical problems contributed.
Closing nearby streets also provides a safer environment for tow operators and cleanup crews while damaged vehicles and debris are removed. Depending on the complexity of the investigation, these closures may last several hours. Once all necessary evidence has been collected and the roadway has been cleared, traffic is gradually allowed to resume under normal conditions.
