Frequently Asked Questions
Does driver fatigue play a role in truck crashes?
It can. Commercial drivers usually cover long distances under tight schedules, and fatigue can slow reaction time as much as alcohol does. Federal rules limit how many hours a trucker can drive before resting, but violations and irregular sleep patterns still contribute to some crashes.
What should I do after a crash involving a commercial truck?
Call 911, move to a safe location if possible, and get medical care even if injuries seem minor. Note the trucking company's name and the truck's markings, and get contact information for any witnesses. A police report will be key for insurance and any later claims.
Why do trucks need more distance to stop than cars?
A loaded semi can weigh 20 to 30 times more than a passenger vehicle, and that extra weight means its brakes need far more distance and time to bring it to a stop, especially at highway speeds or on wet pavement.
What makes a truck crash different from a typical car accident?
The size and weight gap between a truck and a passenger vehicle means the smaller vehicle absorbs most of the impact. Injuries in these crashes tend to be more severe for occupants of the car or SUV than for the truck driver.
What to Do After a Truck Crash in Fernley, NV
If you're involved in a crash with a semi-truck, start by checking yourself and any passengers for injuries, then move somewhere safe if the vehicle is drivable. Call 911 right away so officers and medical crews can respond. Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked out, since some injuries from a truck collision don't show symptoms immediately. Take photos of the vehicles, the road, and any visible damage if you're able to safely do so, and hold onto any paperwork from first responders or the hospital. Fernley sits along a busy interstate corridor, so give yourself extra time to process what happened and lean on family, friends, or local support services while things get sorted out.
