FILLMORE TOWNSHIP, Allegan County, Mich., Oct. 8, 2026 — One person was hospitalized with serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash on Wednesday night, October 7, at an intersection in Fillmore Township, according to the Allegan County Sheriff's Office.
The crash happened around 7:53 p.m. at Lincoln Road and 138th Avenue. Witnesses told investigators a pickup truck was stopped at the intersection with its turn signal on, waiting to head westbound, when a northbound car reportedly failed to stop and struck it.
The driver of the northbound car was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be freed by emergency crews. That driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not released further details on what led up to the collision.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
What the Numbers Show About Intersection Crashes
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, passenger vehicles made up 92 percent of registered vehicles and 89 percent of vehicle miles traveled in 2023. That gap matters at intersections, where most vehicles involved are ordinary cars and trucks rather than commercial or specialty vehicles, meaning the outcome of a crash usually comes down to speed, angle of impact, and whether a driver had time to react rather than the type of vehicles involved.
Intersection crashes make up a large share of police-reported collisions nationally, and many stem from one driver misjudging another vehicle's path or failing to stop in time. A vehicle waiting to turn is especially exposed, since it can be struck broadside or from behind with little warning.
Rural intersections without signals, like many in townships across Michigan, rely on stop signs, yield signs, or simple right-of-way rules. When one driver does not stop as expected, the other usually has only seconds to respond.
Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in car accidents?
Common injuries include whiplash and other neck strain, broken bones, cuts from broken glass, and head or chest injuries from striking the interior of the vehicle. Drivers who are pinned or trapped usually face more severe injuries requiring extrication by emergency crews.
What are the most common causes of car accidents?
Failure to yield or stop at an intersection, distracted driving, speeding, and misjudging another vehicle's distance or speed are frequent factors in crashes like this one.
How does speed affect crash severity?
Higher speed increases both the force of impact and the distance needed to stop. Even a modest increase in speed can turn a survivable crash into one with serious injuries.
Why is distracted driving so dangerous?
A driver who is distracted, even briefly, may not see a stopped or turning vehicle in time to brake or steer away, which is a common factor in intersection crashes.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Fillmore Township, Michigan
If you're involved in a crash, check yourself and any passengers for injuries before doing anything else, and call 911 if anyone is hurt. Move to a safe location only if it's possible to do so without worsening an injury. Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries, like whiplash or internal bruising, don't show symptoms right away.
Exchange information with the other driver and note the names of any responding deputies or officers. If you saw what happened or were nearby, consider staying until law enforcement arrives so you can share what you observed. Keep a copy of any police report filed for your records, and follow up with your doctor if symptoms develop in the days after the crash.
