Frequently Asked Questions
How can cyclists stay safer in traffic?
Riding with lights and reflective gear, especially before sunrise or after dark, helps drivers spot a cyclist sooner. Staying in marked bike lanes where available and riding predictably, with clear hand signals, also reduces the chance of a crash.
What should a cyclist do after a crash with a car?
Call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some take time to show up. Get the driver's information, note the location and any witnesses, and seek medical evaluation as soon as possible.
Do cyclists have the same road rights as drivers?
Yes. In Michigan and most states, cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle operators, including the right to use travel lanes and the duty to obey traffic signals.
Are bicycle crashes more common at intersections?
Intersections are a common site for bicycle crashes because they involve turning vehicles, crossing paths, and limited visibility, all of which raise the chance of a driver and cyclist missing each other.
