FLINT, Flint County, Mich., Oct. 5, 2026 — A woman died Sunday night, October 4, after a vehicle struck her while she was walking along North Dort Highway near Nebraska Avenue on Flint's east side. The driver did not stop, according to Flint police.
The crash happened just before 9 p.m., police said. The vehicle was reportedly traveling northbound on North Dort Hwy when it hit the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.
Investigators said they do not yet know the color, make, or model of the vehicle involved. Police believe it should have heavy front-end damage on the driver's side, based on how the crash happened.
The search for the driver is ongoing. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who died.
How Investigators Piece Together a Hit-And-Run Case
When a driver flees the scene, investigators have to build a case without the one person who could explain what happened. That work usually starts with the physical evidence left behind: debris, paint transfer, tire marks, and the damage pattern on the victim's body or belongings, all of which can help narrow down the type of vehicle involved.
Police often canvass nearby businesses and homes for surveillance video, and they may request traffic camera footage from the area. Body shops and parts suppliers are sometimes alerted to watch for a vehicle matching the described damage, since a driver in a hit-and-run often tries to get repairs done quietly in the days afterward.
Identifying and notifying next of kin takes priority before any public release of a victim's name, which is why agencies often wait to confirm identity even after a death is already known. A full investigative file, including any lab results, can take weeks to finalize, and police typically release new details only as they are confirmed rather than speculate while a case is open.
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than 200,000 vehicle occupants were injured in hit-and-run crashes in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal for a pedestrian?
Speed at impact matters most. The faster a vehicle is moving when it strikes someone on foot, the less chance the person has of surviving, since there's little to absorb the force in a pedestrian collision compared to a crash between two vehicles.
Why is nighttime especially risky for pedestrians?
Reduced visibility is a major factor. Drivers have less time to see and react to someone walking along or crossing a road after dark, especially on roads without dedicated lighting or marked crosswalks.
What should a family do after a hit-and-run death?
Contact the investigating agency for updates and ask who the assigned detective is. It also helps to document any communication, preserve any personal items or records tied to the case, and give the department a consistent way to reach you as new information comes in.
What to Do After a Hit-And-Run Crash in Flint, MI
If you witness a hit-and-run, try to get a description of the vehicle, its direction of travel, and a license plate if possible, then call 911 right away. Do not chase the vehicle yourself.
Anyone involved or nearby should stay at the scene until police arrive and give a statement while details are fresh. If you or someone you know was injured, seek a medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor at first, since some symptoms take hours or days to appear.
Families coping with a loss like this can lean on local victim-services resources, which many police departments offer, and can ask the department about long-term case updates even after initial media coverage fades.
