FLINT, Flint County, Mich., Oct. 17, 2026 — A 27-year-old man died on Friday morning, October 16, in a crash between a car and a semi-truck at the intersection of West Bristol Road and Torrey Road in Flint Township. The Flint Township Police Department said officers responded to the scene around 6 a.m.
Investigators said the man was driving westbound on Bristol Road when his vehicle struck a semi tractor that was turning onto Bristol Road from Torrey Road. He became trapped under the trailer and was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi's driver, a 63-year-old Mount Morris man, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The intersection was closed for several hours while crews processed the scene. The Flint Township Fire Department, the Genesee County Sheriff's Office and a Michigan State Police crash reconstruction team assisted at the site.
The case remains under investigation. Once that work is finished, it will go to the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office, which will decide whether charges are warranted, authorities said.
We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does impairment often factor into fatal crashes?
Alcohol or drug impairment is a factor in a large share of fatal crashes nationally, though investigators have not said whether it played a role here. Impairment slows reaction time and judgment, which matters most at intersections where drivers must react to turning vehicles.
Where do fatal crashes most commonly happen?
Intersections are common sites for serious and fatal crashes because vehicle paths cross and turning movements create conflict points. Rural and semi-rural intersections without signals can be especially risky during low-light hours.
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?
Speed, vehicle size mismatch, and the angle of impact all affect survivability. A collision between a passenger car and a loaded semi-trailer carries far greater risk than a crash between two similar-sized vehicles.
How does speed affect whether people survive a crash?
Higher speeds give drivers less time to react and increase the force involved in a collision. Even modest reductions in speed can improve the odds of survival in an intersection crash.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Flint Township, MI
If you're involved in a crash at an intersection, call 911 right away and stay in a safe location until help arrives. Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical provider, since some injuries don't show symptoms right away. Exchange information with other drivers if it's safe to do so, and avoid discussing fault at the scene. If you witnessed a crash like this one, local police often rely on tips from bystanders to piece together what happened, so consider sharing what you saw with investigators.
