Frequently Asked Questions
Why are multi-vehicle crashes usually harder to investigate than two-car collisions?
With more vehicles involved, investigators have to reconstruct the order of impacts, figure out which vehicle struck which, and sort through multiple accounts of what happened before determining a cause.
What typically triggers a chain-reaction or pile-up crash?
These crashes commonly start when one vehicle slows, stops, or collides unexpectedly, and the vehicles behind it don't have enough distance or time to react before adding to the collision.
Is there anything drivers can do to avoid getting caught in a multi-vehicle crash?
Leaving extra following distance, staying alert near intersections, and slowing early when traffic ahead is braking can help drivers stay out of a chain-reaction collision.
