FORT MYERS, Lee County, Fla., Oct. 1, 2026 — A driver was hurt on Wednesday morning, September 30, after a car crashed through the front of a printing business on Fowler Street in Fort Myers. No one else was seriously hurt in the crash.
Fort Myers police said officers were called to Royal Crest Printing at around 6:44 a.m. Officials told crews at the scene that the driver had been heading northbound on Fowler Street and swerved to avoid another vehicle, losing control and crashing through the building's glass front. Video from the scene showed the car resting fully inside the business.
One person was working inside the business at the time of the crash. The driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that have not been detailed. The police said no foul play is suspected and no arrests have been made.
A worker at the business told reporters on scene that he kept the driver from leaving, but said occupants of the other vehicle involved left before authorities arrived. That vehicle and its occupants had not been identified as of Wednesday. FMPD said the crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.
How Investigators Piece Together a Crash Like This
When a car leaves the road and strikes a building, officers at the scene start by securing the area and documenting what they see: skid marks, debris, the vehicle's final resting position, and damage to the structure. That physical evidence helps reconstruct the sequence of events, including speed, braking, and the path the vehicle took before impact.
Witness accounts, like those from people inside or near a business when a crash happens, are gathered early but checked against physical evidence before anything is treated as confirmed. Departments usually hold back details, such as a driver's identity or exact injuries, until next of kin are notified or until facts are verified, which can take days.
A full report, including any toxicology results or a final determination of cause, typically takes weeks to complete. Agencies say this is intentional. Rushing a conclusion before lab work and reconstruction are finished risks getting the record wrong, and that record usually matters for insurance claims and any legal proceedings that follow.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 23,959 passenger-vehicle occupants were killed in motor-vehicle traffic crashes in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What steps can drivers take to avoid crashes like this?
Keeping a safe following distance, slowing down near intersections and driveways, and staying alert for sudden stops ahead all reduce the chance of a last-second swerve that leads to a loss of control.
What injuries commonly result from a car striking a building?
Occupants can suffer head and neck injuries, broken bones, and cuts from broken glass or debris. Airbag deployment and the force of impact can also cause bruising or internal injuries that aren't immediately obvious.
What usually causes these kinds of crashes?
Common factors include distracted driving, speeding, mechanical failure, and sudden evasive maneuvers to avoid another vehicle or obstacle, as described in this incident.
Does speed make a crash like this worse?
Yes. Higher speed increases the distance needed to stop or steer away from a hazard, and it increases the force of any impact, raising the risk of serious injury and structural damage.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Fort Myers, FL
If you're involved in a crash, check yourself and others for injuries first and call 911 even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries, like concussions or internal bruising, aren't obvious right away. Getting checked by a medical professional soon after the crash creates a record that can matter later.
Stay at the scene until police arrive and give them an accurate account of what happened. Take photos if you're able, and get contact information from any witnesses nearby. If a business or property was damaged, its owner will likely need a copy of the police report for insurance purposes, so ask officers how to request one.
Give yourself time to process what happened. Crashes like this are jarring even when injuries are minor, and it's normal to feel shaken for days afterward.
