Fort Myers, FL (January 21, 2026) – A 19-year-old woman is facing multiple charges following a wrong-way crash that injured at least one person and caused significant property damage on the Cape Coral Bridge early Sunday morning.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene just after midnight on January 18 to investigate a reported hit-and-run. Upon arrival, they found a white Acura with visible damage on both sides, a Mercedes with driver-side impact, and a damaged concrete wall and guardrail.
The driver of the Mercedes told authorities he was heading east across the Cape Coral Bridge when he noticed a vehicle traveling toward him in the wrong direction. The Acura, reportedly speeding, struck his vehicle before continuing forward and crashing into a barrier and guardrail.
When deputies made contact with the driver of the Acura—identified as Ashley Hernandez-Gonzalez—they detected strong signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcohol, slurred speech, and glassy eyes. Hernandez-Gonzalez allegedly failed multiple field sobriety tests and later registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.234, nearly three times Florida’s legal limit of 0.08.
Investigators also discovered that at least two passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, including a 14-year-old girl.
Hernandez-Gonzalez was arrested at the scene and booked into the Lee County Jail. She now faces several charges, including two counts of hit-and-run with property damage, two counts of DUI with property damage, and one count of driving with a BAC of .15 or higher while a minor was present in the vehicle.
Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.
We hope all individuals involved are recovering well from this frightening event.
