Why Do Vehicle Extrications Occur After Serious Crashes?
Vehicle extrications are often required when a crash causes significant structural damage that traps occupants inside a vehicle.
During high-impact collisions, doors, frames, or steering components may become bent or compressed, preventing occupants from exiting safely. In these situations, trained rescue personnel use specialized hydraulic tools to cut or pry open sections of the vehicle.
Roadways such as Interstate 35W can experience heavy traffic at high speeds, which may increase the force involved in a crash. When severe damage occurs, firefighters and rescue teams must carefully stabilize the vehicle before removing trapped occupants and providing medical care.
