Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more likely to happen at night?
Visibility plays a big role, and a large share of fatal pedestrian crashes happen after dark, when drivers have less time to see and react to someone on the road.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a vehicle?
Call 911 right away, stay as still as possible until help arrives, and get checked by medical personnel even if injuries seem minor at first.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in a marked or unmarked crosswalk, but both drivers and pedestrians are expected to watch for each other and yield when needed to avoid a collision.
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone on foot?
Slowing down in areas with foot traffic, scanning the roadside and shoulders, and avoiding distractions behind the wheel all give drivers more time to spot and react to pedestrians.
