Why Intersections Often Lead to Multi-Vehicle Traffic Emergencies
Busy intersections can create added danger for drivers because several directions of travel meet within a short space. Turning vehicles, changing traffic signals, and limited reaction time may all increase the chance of serious roadway problems. Heavier traffic during afternoon and evening hours can also make it harder for motorists to avoid sudden stops.
Road design sometimes affects visibility as well. Curves, nearby businesses, and multiple lanes may reduce the amount of time drivers have to react to another vehicle. Weather and lighting can further affect braking distance and driver awareness.
When several people are involved, medical evaluations may continue for hours after the roadway is cleared. Early reports often provide only limited details while more information is gathered.
