Why Nighttime Pedestrian Crashes Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Pedestrian crashes that happen late at night can become especially dangerous because visibility is reduced for both drivers and people walking near traffic. Headlights may not fully illuminate crosswalks, intersections, or roadside shoulders until a vehicle is already close. Dark clothing, weather conditions, and roadway lighting can also affect how quickly a pedestrian is seen.
Busy intersections near highways or major state routes may carry faster-moving traffic, leaving little reaction time when someone enters the roadway unexpectedly. Investigators often review lighting conditions, vehicle speed, traffic signals, and pedestrian movement patterns after these crashes. Medical evaluations may continue for hours after the initial impact because some injuries are not immediately visible at the scene.
