What Can Happen When a Vehicle Leaves an Interstate?
A vehicle that strikes a barrier on an elevated section of roadway can face additional risks if it leaves the travel surface. The height of the roadway, barrier design, vehicle speed, and direction of impact can affect what happens after a vehicle crosses the roadway edge.
Investigators may examine the vehicle’s condition, roadway markings, barrier damage, tire marks, and other physical evidence when determining how an accident unfolded. Witness statements and available surveillance footage can also help establish the vehicle’s movements before the impact. The location where a vehicle comes to rest can provide additional information about the sequence of events.
