Newport News, VA (August 18, 2026) – Four people were seriously injured early on Sunday after a wrong-way driver struck another vehicle on Interstate 664.
The wreck happened around 4 a.m. on August 16, near Exit 5. Virginia State Police said a 2013 Honda Civic was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it hit a 2026 Mazda CX-50.
After the collision, the Honda driver ran into the roadway and was struck by a 2015 Honda Odyssey. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Three women inside the Mazda also suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital for medical treatment. One of the women, Amber Urena, later said her sister was released, while her sister-in-law remained hospitalized with a broken hip and ribs.
Urena said the women saw the Honda enter the highway and travel toward them before swerving back and forth. She described seeing the driver make a U-turn from an on-ramp before heading the wrong way.
Virginia State Police have not said whether charges were filed or whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision. The investigation is still underway, and we hope everyone hurt continues toward a full recovery.
