Why Head-On Crashes Cause Severe Injuries
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of roadway crashes because the forces of both moving vehicles combine at the moment of impact, which means even at moderate speeds, the energy involved can lead to serious harm for drivers and passengers. In Franklin County, Pennsylvania, crash data has shown that while head-on collisions represent a smaller portion of total crashes, they account for a disproportionately high share of fatal and severe injury incidents, particularly on rural and two-lane roads.
These crashes may occur when a vehicle crosses the center line, enters the wrong lane, or loses control on a curve or narrow roadway, and, in addition, early morning driving can create added risks due to lower visibility and driver fatigue. As a result, motorists may have less time to recognize and respond to hazards ahead.
Vehicle fires sometimes occur after major collisions when fuel systems or electrical components become damaged, and in these situations, quick action from bystanders and emergency crews can help people escape safely and reduce further danger. Because of these risks, wearing seat belts and remaining alert behind the wheel are still considered key factors in reducing severe injuries during major roadway crashes.
