Frequently Asked Questions
Does a vehicle's speed change a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Yes. Even modest reductions in speed at the moment of impact substantially improve a pedestrian's odds of surviving, since lower speeds mean less force transferred in the collision.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur in parking lots, driveways and other low-speed areas where drivers may not expect pedestrians, in addition to roadways and crosswalks.
Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?
Reduced visibility in the evening and nighttime hours is a factor in a large share of pedestrian crashes, making it harder for drivers to see people on foot.
What should a pedestrian do immediately after being struck by a vehicle?
Call 911 right away, avoid moving if injury is suspected until help arrives, and seek a medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor at first.
