Fort Worth, TX (May 31, 2026) – According to official reports, a man died early Sunday morning, May 31, after being struck by a vehicle on the South Freeway near East Ripy Street in Fort Worth.
Fort Worth police said officers responded just before 2 a.m. to the southbound lanes following reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. Investigators said an adult male had exited his vehicle after a minor collision to check the damage when he was struck by another passing vehicle.
Authorities said the driver of the second vehicle initially left the scene but was later located and detained at a separate location. The man struck in the roadway died at the scene. His identity has not been released.
Police also reported a separate crash occurred directly behind the initial collision, though officials confirmed the two incidents were not connected. Occupants involved in the second crash were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Fort Worth Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is continuing to examine how the fatal sequence unfolded. We extend our sincere condolences to the man’s family and loved ones.
Why Secondary Freeway Pedestrian Crashes Often Turn Deadly
Pedestrian incidents on freeways often become especially dangerous because vehicles are traveling at high speeds and drivers have limited time to react. When a person exits a vehicle in an active traffic lane, visibility can be reduced further by headlights, road curvature, and surrounding traffic flow.
Secondary crashes can also occur when additional drivers approach the scene before lanes are secured. In these situations, confusion and sudden braking may increase the risk of further collisions nearby. Investigators typically review vehicle positions, roadway lighting, and driver actions leading up to the moment a pedestrian enters live traffic lanes to determine how these events unfold.
