FREMONT, Alameda County, Calif., Oct. 25, 2026 — A four-vehicle crash with minor injuries shut down lanes on southbound Interstate 880 near Stevenson Boulevard in Fremont on Saturday afternoon, October 24, according to the California Highway Patrol. One of the vehicles caught fire during the response, prompting a fire department call-out, the CHP log shows.
The crash was first reported shortly before 12:25 p.m. as a multi-vehicle collision involving a white Tesla SUV, a red sedan and at least two other vehicles. Airbags deployed in all vehicles involved, the report noted. Callers described lanes two and three blocked, and at least one vehicle was reported not drivable.
CHP initially classified the crash as an unknown-injury collision before updating it to a minor-injury collision shortly before 1 p.m. An ambulance was requested for a person inside the white Tesla, the log shows. Within minutes, callers reported smoke and flames coming from the rear of one of the vehicles, which CHP logs identify as a Tesla. The fire reportedly blocked all lanes for a period before crews made progress, and the call was transferred to Alameda County Fire for a possible vehicle fire.
Multiple tow companies were requested to clear the scene, including trucks for the burned Tesla and at least one other disabled vehicle. CHP also had an additional tow truck positioned at the Stevenson Boulevard on-ramp to assist. By about 1:45 p.m., crews had reduced the closure to one lane, and all lanes reopened by 2:15 p.m.
The cause of the crash and the cause of the fire remain under review. We wish the injured a complete recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do chain-reaction crashes happen?
They typically start when one vehicle slows or stops suddenly and following drivers cannot react in time, especially in heavy highway traffic where following distances are already short.
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a pile-up?
Keeping a steady following distance, watching brake lights several cars ahead, and easing off the accelerator early when traffic bunches up can help give a driver more time to react.
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Stay in your vehicle with seatbelts on if it's safe to do so, turn on hazard lights, and watch for emergency crews and tow trucks moving through narrowed lanes.
How does fog or low visibility contribute to pile-ups?
Reduced visibility shortens the time drivers have to spot a slowdown ahead, which is part of why multi-vehicle crashes are more common when conditions obscure the road.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Fremont, CA
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, move to a safe spot off the traffic lanes if your vehicle is drivable, and check on passengers in nearby vehicles. Call 911 even for what seems like a minor collision, since injuries from multi-car pile-ups aren't always obvious right away. Get checked by a medical provider in the days following the crash, exchange insurance information with other drivers, and request a copy of the CHP report once it's available for your records.
