Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk or along a roadway?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and walkers both share responsibility for watching for each other, especially on highways or roads without sidewalks where foot traffic is less expected.
What can drivers do to watch for pedestrians along highways at night?
Slowing down in areas without lighting, scanning the shoulders and lanes ahead, and staying alert for people walking along rural highways can make a real difference, since pedestrians are much harder to see after dark.
What injuries are most common when a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle?
Pedestrian crashes often cause broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries, since there's little protection between a person and a moving vehicle.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Fremont, NE
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should contact local law enforcement immediately so the scene can be documented and medical help can respond. Witnesses should stay nearby if it's safe to do so, since firsthand accounts often help investigators piece together what happened. Family members of someone involved in a crash like this should ask for a copy of the official police report once it's available and keep records of any medical treatment. Fremont residents and visitors along Hwy 30 should also remember that rural highway shoulders and lanes are often unlit at night, making caution in these areas especially important for both drivers and anyone on foot.
