FRENCH CAMP, San Joaquin County, Calif., Oct. 21, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash on northbound State Route 99 near French Camp Road sent at least one person to a hospital on Tuesday morning, October 20, the California Highway Patrol said. The collision involved a semi-truck and reportedly left road debris, including a detached axle, in the path of traffic.
The crash began shortly after 6:10 a.m. when a white Toyota Corolla collided with a semi-truck trailer on the northbound onramp area near French Camp Road. Reports from the scene described an axle coming loose and striking another vehicle's windshield, and a separate collision involving a white Ford pickup also unfolded nearby, though CHP's notes suggest it may have been part of the same chain of events. As many as four vehicles were ultimately involved.
One person suffered a facial injury from broken glass, authorities reported, and was described as a California Highway Patrol officer in the radio log. Another occupant, in a white Chevrolet work truck, reportedly suffered a glass injury to the eye and was taken to a hospital in Manteca. The CHP initially classified the crash as an unknown-injury collision before updating it to a minor-injury collision.
Fire crews and a tow rotation were called to the scene to help clear vehicles and debris from the freeway. The CHP also requested a Freeway Service Patrol unit to remove vehicles from the roadway, and that unit later closed out its response. A second, smaller two-vehicle collision with no reported injuries was also logged nearby and cleared within the hour.
The CHP has not released the causes of the crashes or identified those involved. The incident remains under investigation.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are crashes involving semi-trucks commonly more serious than crashes between passenger cars?
A loaded semi can weigh tens of thousands of pounds more than a car or pickup, so even a low-speed impact can cause heavier damage and more serious injury to occupants of smaller vehicles.
What are truck blind spots, and why do they matter in crashes like this one?
Large trucks have wide no-visibility zones along both sides, behind the trailer, and directly in front of the cab. Vehicles merging or driving in these zones may not be seen by the driver, which can contribute to lane-change and onramp collisions.
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer during a collision, usually because the trailer sits higher off the ground than a car's safety structure.
What typically causes large-truck collisions like this one?
Common factors include driver fatigue, following too closely, mechanical failure such as a detached wheel or axle, and congestion from a prior crash or road hazard.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in French Camp, CA
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, move to a safe area if your car is drivable and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic. Call 911 and wait for law enforcement to document the scene, even if injuries seem minor at first, since some injuries from flying glass or debris don't show symptoms right away. Get checked by a medical provider as soon as possible, and keep a record of any treatment. Exchange information with other drivers if it's safe to do so, and take photos of vehicle positions and any road debris if you're able. Report the crash to your insurance company promptly and keep a copy of the official collision report for your records.
