Frequently Asked Questions
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer during a collision, usually because the trailer sits higher off the ground than the car's main crash structure.
What typically causes large-truck collisions?
Common factors include driver fatigue, following too closely, blind spots around long trailers, mechanical problems, and sudden lane changes or merges by nearby traffic.
How can drivers stay safer around big rigs?
Staying out of a truck's blind spots, leaving extra following distance, and avoiding sudden lane changes near trailers can reduce the chance of a serious collision.
Does driver fatigue play a role in truck crashes?
Yes. Long hours behind the wheel can slow reaction time for any driver, and fatigue is frequently cited as a contributing factor in crashes involving commercial trucks.
