Frequently Asked Questions
Does wearing a seat belt matter in a rollover crash? Yes. Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown around the cabin or ejected when a vehicle rolls, which significantly improves the odds of surviving without severe injury.
What is a "tripped" rollover? It happens when a vehicle's tires catch on something, such as soft shoulder, a curb or soft field terrain, causing the vehicle to flip rather than slide. Many rural rollovers start this way when a vehicle leaves the paved roadway.
What can drivers do at rural intersections like this one? Slowing for cross traffic, scanning both directions before proceeding, and staying alert for vehicles that may not stop can help avoid the kind of collision that leads to a rollover.
Are rollovers more likely on certain kinds of roads? Rollovers happen more commonly on rural roads with higher speed limits, narrow shoulders and uneven terrain, where a vehicle that drifts off the pavement has farther to travel before regaining control.
