Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes crashes between vehicles and electric scooters?
Many of these crashes happen at intersections, when a driver turning or crossing fails to see a scooter rider in time, or when a rider enters traffic without the right of way. Limited visibility and the scooter's smaller size both play a role.
How does speed affect the severity of a scooter crash?
Even at relatively low speeds, a collision between a vehicle and a scooter can cause serious injury because the rider has little protection. Higher speeds increase stopping distance and the force of impact, raising the risk of severe injury.
Why is distracted driving a particular risk for scooter riders?
A scooter is harder to spot than a car, so a driver who is distracted, even briefly, may miss a rider entering a crosswalk or intersection. Because riders have no outer shell to absorb impact, any delay in reacting can lead to a serious injury.
Do weather or road conditions make scooter crashes more likely?
Wet pavement, poor lighting and uneven road surfaces can all affect a scooter's stability and a driver's ability to see a rider in time to stop. Riders and drivers alike are urged to use extra caution in low-visibility conditions.
