GARNAVILLO, Clayton County, Iowa, Oct. 11, 2026 — Four people were injured Saturday morning, October 10, in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 52 near Garnavillo, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened around 10:16 a.m. when an SUV stopped on Highway 52 attempted to turn left onto Highway 18 and failed to yield to an eastbound pickup truck. The pickup struck the SUV broadside, and both vehicles then hit a semi-truck that was stopped in a westbound turn lane on Highway 18, investigators said.
All three vehicles came to rest in the intersection, blocking traffic there for a time.
The SUV driver was taken by ambulance to Crossing Rivers Health, while a passenger in the SUV was flown to Gundersen Medical Center. The pickup's driver and passenger were taken by ambulance to a hospital in Elkader. The conditions of those injured have not been released.
The crash remains under investigation.
We wish those injured a full recovery.
How Investigators Piece Together a Multi-Vehicle Crash
When three vehicles collide at a rural intersection, reconstructing the sequence of impacts takes more than a quick look at the scene. Troopers typically measure skid marks, vehicle positions, and debris fields, and may use drone photography or laser mapping to document the intersection before it reopens to traffic. These measurements let a reconstruction specialist later calculate speed, angle of impact, and the order in which the vehicles struck one another.
Toxicology results, when samples are drawn, often take weeks to come back from a lab, since blood and urine testing is processed in batches. Mechanical inspections of the vehicles, data pulled from onboard event recorders, and witness interviews also factor into a final report, and each piece has its own timeline.
Agencies generally hold back details like names until next of kin have been notified, a step that can take longer than the public expects, especially when a patient is transferred between hospitals or flown out of the area. None of this reflects anything unusual about a given case. It is simply how thorough crash investigations are built, piece by piece, so that the final report holds up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is distracted driving a factor in so many intersection crashes?
Even a brief glance away from the road, at a phone, a dashboard screen, or elsewhere, can mean missing a stop sign, a yield point, or a vehicle approaching the intersection. Intersections demand constant attention because conditions change in seconds.
How do weather and road conditions play into crashes like this?
Wet or icy pavement extends stopping distance and makes it harder to judge whether there's enough time to turn or cross safely. Even in clear weather, glare or an obstructed view at an intersection can affect a driver's ability to judge oncoming traffic.
What should I do right after a car accident?
Move to a safe spot if possible, call 911, and seek a medical check even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Exchange information with other drivers and, if you're able, take photos of the vehicles and the scene before traffic clears it.
Where do most traffic crashes happen?
A large share of crashes occur at intersections, where turning, crossing, and merging paths create the most opportunities for a driver to misjudge another vehicle's speed or right of way.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Garnavillo, IA
If you're involved in a crash in or around Garnavillo, stay at the scene and call 911 right away so troopers and medical crews can respond. Let paramedics evaluate you even if you feel fine; some injuries, especially from a broadside or multi-vehicle impact, aren't obvious right away.
Once you're safe, remember to request a copy of the official crash report from the Iowa State Patrol for your records. If you were a passenger or a bystander, try to write down what you remember as soon as you can, since small details fade quickly after a stressful event.
