Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a multi-vehicle pile-up?
Keep a safe following distance, watch brake lights several cars ahead, and slow down early at intersections or stretches where visibility is reduced. Reacting sooner gives following drivers more time to stop too.
What should I do if I come upon a crash blocking the road?
Slow down well before the scene, turn on hazard lights, and merge out of blocked lanes as early as possible. Avoid stopping in a travel lane if you can safely pull onto a shoulder or side street instead.
Why does following distance matter so much in multi-vehicle crashes?
A short gap between cars leaves little time to react if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, which is often what turns a single crash into a chain-reaction involving several vehicles.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Glendale, CA
If you're involved in a crash with several vehicles, stay inside your car if it's unsafe to get out, and remember to turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic. Check on passengers and other drivers only if it's safe to do so, and call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear. Wait for police or fire personnel to clear the scene before moving a damaged vehicle unless it's blocking active traffic and you're able to do so safely. Afterward, see a doctor for a checkup even if you feel fine, and keep any paperwork from the responding agency for your records.
