Grand Rapids, MI (February 28, 2026) – An 82-year-old man died after a two-car crash at the intersection of Northland Drive and 7 Mile Road on Tuesday afternoon, February 25. Emergency units responded to the scene around 2:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious accident involving two vehicles.
According to the Michigan State Police, a vehicle traveling southbound on Northland Drive attempted to turn east onto 7 Mile Road. The turning vehicle entered the path of a northbound vehicle and was struck, causing major damage to both cars. The impact forced one vehicle onto its side and blocked northbound traffic in the area for several hours.
Michael Monson witnessed the crash and stopped to help. He and another bystander worked together to free an elderly woman whose leg was pinned inside the wrecked vehicle. The woman was successfully removed from the scene and taken to medical care.
The 82-year-old man, who was the front-seat passenger in the turning vehicle, was also trapped and hurt in the crash. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Turning Accidents at Intersections Can Be Especially Dangerous
Turning accidents often happen at intersections when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming traffic. These crashes frequently involve side impacts, which can cause severe damage because vehicle sides offer less protection than the front or rear. Even at moderate speeds, these collisions can lead to rollovers or people becoming trapped inside.
Intersections with multiple lanes or heavy traffic can increase the risk of these accidents. Drivers may feel pressure to complete turns quickly, leading to errors. Visibility can also be limited by other vehicles, weather, or road design.
Safety features such as seat belts, airbags, and reinforced vehicle frames can reduce injury. However, crashes involving older passengers or severe impacts often result in more serious outcomes due to increased physical vulnerability.
