Granville County, N.C., Sept. 20, 2026 — Three members of a Charlotte family died early on Saturday morning, September 19, when their SUV struck a parked fire truck on northbound I-85 in Granville County, according to state troopers. A fourth family member, a child, was injured.
The crash was reported around 4 a.m. near mile marker 197 at the Smith Road overpass. A Providence Volunteer Fire Department truck was stopped in the left lane with its emergency lights on, positioned to protect troopers working an earlier crash in the area, according to the state highway patrol.
The family's SUV was traveling north in the same lane and hit the back of the fire truck. No one was in the fire truck at the time, and no one else was hurt.
Troopers identified the couple who died as Jason Nye, 36, and Christina Nye, 37, along with one of their children. Authorities said the family was believed to be driving from Charlotte to New York. Investigators said they believe the driver fell asleep shortly before the crash.
