Why Train Strikes Are So Often Fatal for Pedestrians
A freight or passenger train weighs hundreds of times more than a person, and that weight difference means the outcome of any contact is decided almost entirely by the train, not by anything the pedestrian does in the final seconds. A car crash can involve two vehicles absorbing energy between crumple zones. A train has none built for that purpose because it isn't designed to interact with a person on the tracks at all.
Speed compounds the problem in a different way than it does on roads. Trains cannot swerve, and stopping distances for a train moving at speed are measured in football-field lengths, not car lengths. That means the time between a train crew spotting someone on or near the tracks and any potential impact is often too short for either side to react, even with the train's horn or lights.
Rail corridors that run alongside roadways or through industrial areas, like stretches of track near ramps and crossings, often lack fencing, marked crossings, or pedestrian signals found at busier intersections. That gap creates a recurring point where people on foot and rail traffic share space with little separation, similar to how arterial roads without sidewalks force pedestrians and vehicles into a single, narrow path.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 77 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrian collisions often cause head trauma, spinal injuries, broken bones, and internal injuries, largely because a pedestrian has no protective structure between them and the impact.
What are the most common causes of pedestrian accidents?
Common factors include limited visibility, distracted driving or walking, failure to yield at crossings, and pedestrians or vehicles in areas without marked crossings or adequate lighting.
How does vehicle or train speed affect survival?
Higher speed reduces reaction time for both the pedestrian and the operator and increases the force of any impact, which lowers the chance of survival.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many occur at or near intersections, ramps, and stretches of road or rail corridors that lack marked crossings, sidewalks, or pedestrian signals.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Greensboro, NC
Anyone who witnesses a pedestrian struck by a vehicle or train should call 911 immediately and avoid approaching the tracks or roadway until emergency crews arrive. If you are involved in or near this type of incident, seek medical evaluation even if you feel uninjured, since some injuries are not immediately apparent.
Cooperate with responding officers and provide any information you observed, as this helps investigators piece together what happened. Following up with Greensboro police for updates on the investigation, and allowing time for agencies like Amtrak and Norfolk Southern to complete their review, is the appropriate next step for anyone seeking more information.
