A Common Misconception About Bicycle Crashes
Many people assume most bicycle crashes happen on open roads, where cars pass cyclists at high speed. In reality, a large share of crashes between bikes and vehicles happen at or near intersections, driveways and entrances, places where a driver or cyclist is turning, crossing, or merging and may not see the other in time.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 49,989 pedalcyclists were injured in traffic crashes in 2023. That volume reflects how often these crashes happen in ordinary, low-speed settings, not just on highways or rural roads.
The assumption that slower speeds mean lower risk also doesn't always hold up. A cyclist struck at a park entrance or parking lot exit can be seriously hurt even when a vehicle is moving slowly, because the cyclist has little protection against any impact.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a cyclist do after being hit by a car?
Call 911 even if injuries seem minor, stay at the scene until police arrive, and get checked by a medical provider since some injuries, like concussions or internal bruising, aren't obvious right away.
Do cyclists have the same rights on the road as drivers?
In South Carolina and most states, cyclists are generally entitled to the same rights and subject to the same rules as other vehicle operators, including at intersections and when crossing driveways.
Are bicycle crashes more likely at intersections?
Yes. A significant portion of bike-vehicle crashes occur at intersections, driveways, or entrances, where turning or crossing movements create conflict points between cyclists and drivers.
What injuries are most common in bicycle crashes?
Common injuries include fractures, road rash, head injuries, and bruising or soft-tissue damage from impact or falls. Head injuries are a particular concern for cyclists not wearing helmets.
What to Do After a Bicycle Crash in Greenville, SC
If you're involved in or witness a bicycle crash in Greenville, start by checking for injuries and calling 911. Even a cyclist who feels fine should be evaluated by a medical professional, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or head trauma.
Stay put until officers arrive so they can document the scene and gather statements. If you're able, note details like the time, weather, and any vehicle information you observe. Follow up with your own doctor in the days after the crash, especially if soreness or symptoms develop later.
