Lansing, IL (June 25, 2026) – A 23-year-old Hammond man lost his life on Wednesday morning after being struck along Interstate 80 in Lansing.

According to the Illinois State Police, Sebastian Stone was traveling westbound on I-80 near Torrence Avenue on his way to work in Elk Grove Village when his vehicle became disabled. Family members said a tire problem forced him to pull onto the shoulder of the highway.

While attempting to change the tire, Stone was struck by a passing vehicle. His family believes the driver left the scene following the collision. Emergency responders were called to the area, but Stone died from the injuries he sustained.

The incident caused significant traffic delays extending toward the Indiana state line as investigators worked at the scene. Authorities have not released additional information regarding the vehicle involved or whether the crash is officially being investigated as a hit-and-run.

The Illinois State Police said the investigation remains active. Anyone with information about the collision is encouraged to contact investigators.

Our deepest condolences go out to Stone’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Why Disabled Vehicles on Highways Create Serious Risks

Vehicles stopped on the shoulder of a busy highway can leave drivers and passengers vulnerable. High traffic speeds, limited shoulder space, and reduced reaction times can increase the danger for anyone outside a vehicle near moving traffic.

Safety experts usually recommend moving a disabled vehicle to the safest possible location, such as an exit ramp or parking area, if it can be done safely. Remaining inside the vehicle with seat belts fastened may sometimes be safer than standing near traffic, depending on the circumstances and location.

After a fatal roadside collision, investigators typically review physical evidence, vehicle damage, witness statements, and roadway conditions to determine exactly what occurred. In cases where a driver may have left the scene, authorities may also examine surveillance footage, vehicle debris, and witness accounts to help identify those involved. These investigative efforts can provide critical information about how the tragedy unfolded and whether criminal charges may be warranted.
